What happened to the good old days of carving a pumpkin and placing it on the doorstep? It even seemed like my neighbours were competeing with one and other to see who could come up with best decorating ideas. Interestingly, my favorite house was one where the people had carved out a family of pumpkins and had placed them on the lawn. So much for those people trying to win me over with their fancy lights and hot air pumpkins.
Now I am one for celebrating any kind of holiday. Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. I love going to the Halloween parties and the haunted houses. I enjoy dressing up and handing out candies. But I do think there is a limit. Commericalism is taking the fun out of all my favorite holidays. While I was shopping for my Halloween costume last week, I went into a store that played a Christmas Carol. Hello peeps! Christmas is still 2 months away. Let's not get carried away. One Holiday at a time please. I am so not ready for the onslaught of Christmas Commericals and promotions that are headed my way. I think I will cuddle up in my basement until Decemeber so that I am not tired of Christmas before it even arrives.
Yes it has been a while since I have blogged (what's a month here and there), but in my defence I do not have a computer of my own (tragedy I know, but I am getting one in the fall). So this one is for you Aubree. I know that you check my blog on a regular basis hoping for a tidbit.
Thought of the day: What's with People and Voicemail.
In my job I am constantly leaving messages for people. It truly amazes me what people will put on their machines. Especially when you consider that I am calling them with regards to possible employment.
Here are just a few of my favorites that I have come across:
"Hi you have reached (enter name here). I'm either sleeping or with my honey, but leave me a message and I might call you back"
" Hi you have reached the old number of (enter name here). If you know my new number then give me a holler. If you are not privilleged enough to know that number, then chances are I don't want to speak to you, so you can leave a message at this number and I will return your call if I feel like it" (and you wonder why this person is still looking for a job).
" Hello?....Hi?......Hellooo?....Sorry Guess we're not in right now, plese leave a message". This one was really well done, it took me a moment before I realized that I was talking to a machine.
Now lets not forget those people who insist on letting their message be a song. In my opinion this is never a good idea. The sound is always crappy and the song goes on way to long. If the song goes on forever, then I don't leave a message. I have better things to do with my time. In the numerous times that I have come across this I have only heard one song as voicemail that had good sound and was short, however the choice of song left a lot to be desired.
So lesson of the day: Voicemail- keep it short and simple.
So I've finally taken the plunge. Not only have I jumped on the Blog bandwagon, but now I figure I should use it to it's potential and actually post something (Aren't you proud of me Aubree?)
My thought of the day is all about winter blues. As I was coming home on the bus last night I started to read one of those free magazines that you get at the movie theatre. One of the articles mentioned how February is the worst month. How true. The weather sucks and there is no holidays. It's a good thing that it is also the shortest month.
What happened to the good old days when winter was actually fun. The anticipation of a possible snow day, racing your friends down steep hills on slides, building snow forts. Now I'm living in a place where snow days do not exist, but the temperatre is much colder and the thought of snow means I might have to shovel the driveway. I'm all about working out, but I prefer using the gym.
WInter now pretty much means acting like a bear and hibernating. Staying inside with a big mug of hot chocolate is much more appealling. Friday night I actually chose to stay home and watch a movie over going to a concert, because the idea of waiting outside in a line up was much too frightening.
Let's hope that Willie really did see his shadow and that Spring is just around the corner. I am tired of being cooped up in a cage like a chicken. Visions of BBQ's, beaches and icecream are floating in my head.
